The Indie Film Clinic is a not for profit clinical program that provides free legal services to filmmakers producing independent, documentary, and student films and to artists providing services in independent and documentary film. The clinic's mission is to provide the next generation of Cardozo lawyers with a solid grounding in transactional legal skills and to strengthen New York City as a center of independent film production by dedicating the resources of Cardozo’s IP and Information Law Program to New York’s independent film sector, ensuring that the projects and clients we represent have a legal foundation leading to commercial and artistic success.

All clients are represented pro bono on a range of issues critical to any production, including the drafting and negotiation of entity formation documents and agreements, talent, crew, and producer agreements, depiction releases, music, film clip, and artwork licenses, legal opinion letters on fair use and First Amendment issues, and other advice depending on the context of the film and the needs of the client. Since it's launch in January 2011, students enrolled in The Indie Film Clinic have provided transactional legal services to over 90 independent, documentary, and student films. Client films have screened in leading U.S. and international film festivals including Cannes, Sundance, Berlinale, South by Southwest, Rotterdam, New Directors/New Films, the Tribeca Film Festival, the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), the Los Angeles Film Festival, Hot Docs, DOC NYC, and more.

The Indie Film Clinic accepts submissions on a rolling basis. Email us at indiefilmclinic@yu.edu to submit a project for consideration. Filmmakers and producers should submit detailed budget information, a description of existing and anticipated sources of funding, a project synopsis and/or pitch book, if available, contact information, and any additional information relevant to the submission. Once reviewed, we will contact you either to discuss the submission by phone or to schedule an in-person interview.

The Indie Film Clinic receives generous support from the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund. The Illumination Fund’s support helps Cardozo Law expand critical legal resources to the New York City film community.
