Cardozo approaches the study of the law from within the broad humanistic tradition. Exposed to the origins of legal thought and the contexts in which the law has been applied, students acquire a rich understanding of the law that provides knowledge and insight and forms the basis for strong careers.
The academic program exposes students both to the abstractions, intellectual and ethical conundrums, and overarching theories of the American legal system and to the concrete skills and values they will need to be first-rate attorneys.
Cardozo’s combination of courses, special programs, and clinics blends theory and practice to produce professionals thoroughly trained in the law and lawyering. Students are driven academically by a rigorous and stimulating curriculum, choosing from a wide range of specialty areas that allow for both scholarly and practical focus. The curriculum is sufficiently deep as to offer a range of concentrations in subjects ranging from Constitutional, Corporate, International, and Family law to Intellectual Property Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Jurisprudence, and Legal Theory, among others.
In addition, Cardozo’s rich variety of clinics, internships and externships provide students hands-on training in the legal skills needed in the courtroom, in the conference room, and with clients.
Cardozo offers a J.D. program for applicants with a bachelor’s degree and LL.M. programs for law school graduates who wish to pursue advanced study.
