Royal Dutch Petroleum, decided on by the U.S. Supreme Court yesterday, Justice Stephen Breyer cited a note from the Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law to support his argument that other nations allow lawsuits brought by foreigners against foreigners based on conduct abroad.

Gene patenting “impedes your relationship to your physician,” said Daniel Ravicher, president of the New York- based Public Patent Foundation, which along with the American Civil Liberties Union represents the challengers. “It gives exclusive monopolistic control over a portion of your body to a corporation whose legally required interest is to maximize profits for its shareholders.”

His co-counsel on the case, Daniel Ravicher, said granting patents on genes was "morally offensive".
