Externs must work unpaid under the personal direction of a supervising attorney or judge. Externs must work 10-15 hours/week each week of the spring or fall semester, or at least 20 hours/week for 8 weeks in the summer term. They receive academic credit and take a co-requisite seminar exploring the practice they observe and participate in. Supervising attorneys and judges should provide substantive legal work equivalent to what an entry-level attorney would do; give the students feedback on written and other work throughout the semester and discuss the written goals memo students write at the beginning of the term; make time for exposing students to the broad context of the work whenever possible (e.g. in meetings and conference calls), and for answering questions; try to assign students legal writing to fulfill their externship writing requirement; and fill out an end-of-term evaluation.
